On August 31 Ramil Safarov, a lieutenant of the Azerbaijani armed forces who was convicted for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary, was trasferred to Azerbaijan in order to serve the sentence imposed on him at the longstanding request by the Azerbaijni authorities.
Instead, lieutenant Safarov had reveived a glorious welcome in Azerbaijan and a few hours after his return was granted a presidential pardon, set free and promoted to major.
The European Parliament could only deplore the hero welcome and presidential pardon granted to Safarov because it runs contrary to the spirit of the international agreement.
The lack of any substantial progres as regards the peace process in Nagorno-Karabakh does not justify neither acts of revenge nor provocations that add tension to an already tense and fragile situation in the region.
