L. Andrikiene MEP on recent elections in Bangladesh
Recent elections in Bangladesh
Speech by Laima Andrikienė MEP (EPP, Lithuania)
Strasbourg
January 16, 2014
Mr President, on 5 December 2013 I hosted a PPE public hearing entitled ‘Bangladesh: Towards free and fair national elections’, with the Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party representatives taking part. Today we are all well aware of the outcome of the elections and of the post-election situation in the country. We call on the government of the country to immediately halt all repressive methods used by the security forces and to release arbitrarily-arrested opposition politicians.
In order to get out of the political crisis, I believe that all options should be considered, including an early election if all legitimate political parties are willing to stand and offer voters a choice. Of course, the EU should use all means at its disposal to assist such a process.
