EP plenary session: Laima Andrikiene MEP on the Iran nuclear deal

Dear Colleagues, we have to admit that the agreement limiting Iran to civilian nuclear activity was a major achievement of European and international multilateral diplomacy and shall guarantee peace and stability. The deal works and delivers on its promises, fully or partially, and this agreement should be preserved.
Despite this milestone in practical cooperation between the European Union and Iran, the scope of our bilateral relations is well below potential, and we have to ask ourselves, isn’t it a high time to focus more on the situation of ordinary Iranians? To speak about the deteriorating human rights situation and the grievous conditions of activists, about poverty, corruption, the crackdown of the opposition, repressions against women and religious minorities, as well as about the role Iran plays in Syria and some other countries of the region.
